Discord Hack Washup Announcement As you know we recently had a hack on our Discord, which is now back up and running. What happened? A member of the team fell victim to a very sophisticated social engineering attack. This resulted in their Discord credentials being stolen. The hacker then conducted an operation to attempt to takeover our Discord server. Our security setup meant that they were not wholly successful, they could not takeover the server entirely. However they were able to convince a number of people that we were conducting an Airdrop, where on interacting with a suspicious smart contract, their MetaMask private keys were stolen and wallets emptied. Once the scammer realised they could not conduct a full takeover, they stole our Vanity URL and redirected it to a fake Minima server in order to try and get new joiners to fall for their scam. What have we done in response to this? - We were able to recover our server quickly, thanks to robust recovery processes. - We are working with Discord to get the fake server taken down and recover our Vanity URL - We have implemented an additional security measure which ensures that no team member can perform admin tasks or post announcements/links without a second team members 2FA approval - We are engaging an external Discord Security expert to review our setup. We are confident that what we had in place did as it was supposed to, however we want to be doubly sure. What can you do? It is never pleasant for anyone in the team when we see people scammed within our and the wider crypto community. We already do what we can to prevent this, although as a fully decentralised blockchain there isn’t anything we can do centrally to prevent you from taking actions to compromise yourself. We recognise that it is a huge responsibility being responsible for your own security, which is why as an organisation we try to make this easier for you by: 1) Never conducting airdrops 2) Never dropping a surprise announcement on you that requires an action on your part. We always telegraph weeks in advance if we ever need you to do something, to make sure that you know it is legitimate. We also would never post something in the middle of the night whilst the EU based majority of the team is sleeping. 3) Regularly warn you to be careful online and not trust things without confirmation. Additionally, if we need you to interact with Metamask we ensure that the smart contract is legitimate. You won’t ever get a scam or phishing warning from Metamask. In the case of this scam, we know that users had this warning and chose to override it - actively giving the scammer permission to execute the scam. The team really, really want to make it clear that we wish you all to listen to your minds rather than your hearts. If something looks too good to be true - it usually is. Nothing is so urgent that you can’t wait to speak to a team member, or cross check on other Minima social channels. Recent Achievements: Last month, we successfully completed the improved Earn feature with a couple of new packages, which have been very well received by you, our community. Following the release, we've listened to your feedback and will be implementing further improvements to Earn. In addition to these improvements, we've collaborated with other projects like Angle. You can now find our Nash widget directly integrated into their app. We've also updated the widget to support the purchase of Earn tokens without the need for the mobile app. Upcoming Enhancements: This month, after a comprehensive and systematic UX study, we've started working on an update to simplify the onboarding experience of the app to provide newcomers with a smooth experience on par with established players out there. This is an important step as we near feature completeness. The next release will make the app more robust in terms of compliance across all flows, offering greater flexibility for us and ease of use for the users. Overall, we aim to have this new version in your hands as soon as possible. Web App Update and Debit Cards: We also want to update you on our Webapp product. Some of the upcoming debit card features work in conjunction with our L2 exchange. To enable cost efficient deposits and withdrawals to the exchange for better UX and more efficient market making, we will focus on Layer 2 EVMs. As a consequence we are sunsetting some of the native chains and its markets. We’ve already launched several new pairs with more pairs to come soon. Stay tuned for the addition of further L2 EVM chains. We might revisit this decision at a later point.
